Rzeszów is a city with a population of almost 170 thousand; it is the capital of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship (Province), the seat of the Rzeszów Diocese, and the largest industrial, trade and service, academic and cultural centre in south-eastern Poland. Rzeszów is situated on the Wisłok River, which flows into the San River in the vicinity of Tryńcza, north of the city. It also lies at the junction of two geographical regions: the flat and woody Kotlina Sandomierska (Sandomierz Basin) and the picturesque, undulating Pogórze Karpackie (Carpathian Foothills). The Rzeszów Region is numbered among the warmest in Poland, situated as it is in a submontane climatic zone characterized by long hot summers and moderately severe winters.
Rzeszów’s convenient location at the junction of major transport routes and close to the southern and eastern borders of Poland (approximately 90 km from the borders with Ukraine and Slovakia) contribute to the development of economy, trade and tourism. The city is an important hub of various international highways: the E-40 from Dresden to Lviv and Kiev, the E-371 from Gdańsk and Warsaw to Slovakia and southern Europe, as well as national roads no. 9 and 19 that help connect the Scandinavian and Baltic states with those in central-eastern Europe.
The road and rail network is complemented by the modern Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport, located less than 3 km from the city limits. There is a regular flight connection to Warsaw, and the airport is capable of receiving all types of aircraft, even in very difficult weather conditions. A modern terminal and the second-longest runway in Poland result from a recent modernization of the Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport. From 2005, the Irish airline Rynair has organized international flights between Rzeszów and London, and between Rzeszów and Frankfurt am Main.
